Reviews and guidelines

Systematic reviews, meta-analyses and clinical guidelines on MS, NMOSD and MOGAD since 2015. Reviews pool the results of many studies, so they are often the best single summary of what is known. Each one is tagged by software and linked to the medicines, hypotheses and frontiers it covers.

Mapping the prevalence of Epstein-Barr virus and multiple sclerosis in Middle East and North Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis. (opens in a new tab)

Researchers pooled published studies from Middle East and North Africa and found MS cases and EBV infections both rose over time, with MS rising more sharply.

From the abstract

Based on a probable ecological correlation between the increasing prevalence of MS and EBV, the preventive measures against EBV infection may potentially yield favorable outcomes in terms of MS prevention.

Evaluating the Clinical Utility of Epstein-Barr Virus Antibodies as Biomarkers in Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review. (opens in a new tab)

A review of 36 studies found EBV antibody levels do not reliably predict MS course, though they may reflect disease activity and treatment response.

From the abstract

EBV antibody levels are unlikely to represent prognostic biomarkers in MS.

Association between human herpesviruses and multiple sclerosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis. (opens in a new tab)

Researchers pooled 134 studies and found that infection with EBV, VZV and herpesvirus 6 is linked to a higher chance of developing multiple sclerosis.

From the abstract

The results of the present study showed that EBV, VZV, and HHV-6 infection are associated with multiple sclerosis and can be considered as potential risk factors for MS.

Environmental risk factors of multiple sclerosis in the Middle East and North Africa region: A systematic review. (opens in a new tab)

This review of 16 studies from the Middle East and North Africa found that sunlight may protect against MS, while smoking, measles, EBV infection and stress may raise risk.

From the abstract

Among 47 assessed risk factors, sunlight exposure, cigarette smoking, measles infection, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, and stressful events had a significant association with MS.

Environmental risk factors and multiple sclerosis: an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. (opens in a new tab)

Researchers reviewed 44 meta-analyses of environmental factors and MS. Only EBV antibodies, infectious mononucleosis, and smoking showed strong, reliable links to developing the disease.

From the abstract

A biomarker of Epstein-Barr virus (anti-EBNA IgG seropositivity), infectious mononucleosis, and smoking showed the strongest consistent evidence of an association.
